Joseph was the third son of Mr.John Sahayam and Mrs.Salome John Sahayam, the second daughter of Rev.J.Joshua, second Pastor of NAGERCOIL Home Church.  He grew up in the Mavadi house with his brothers David, Thankaraj and sisters Annapuranam, Gnanai and Annammal.  He was a very soft natured man and possessed all the qualities of a gentleman.  He loved his sisters and brothers and all their children.  He was very lovingly called “Joe” by the elders and Joe Uncle by his nieces and nephews.  He was very interested in Hymns and Lyrics and sang them very well and taught them also .  He was a very good violinist.

He married his first cousin Sophia who was the daughter of Arulayi, the sister of John Sahayam.  Her father was Mr.William.  They loved each other, married and lived happily throughout their life. She was a great gift to Joseph and a good samaritan to the needy, be they rich or poor. They had three children - Leela, Sahaya Singh, and Willie.  These children were brought up lovingly and with discipline by the parents.  They possessed naturally a very loving and helpful nature.  Uncle Joe after passing his B.A.L.T. started his career as a teacher. He worked in theGovernment Boys School, Marthandam and  Eraniel Government High School , for a long time and lived in Marthandam and Neyyoor

Then he worked at the S.L.B.Government High School in NAGERCOIL, and  lived  with his family at  the house of his own which is opposite the Women’s Christian College, NAGERCOIL, and stands in the Mavadi Compound.  After his retirement he worked in the Pooteti Lutheran High School for a few years.

Joe uncle’s daughter Leela got married to Captain G.Nelson from Trivandrum who served in the Armed Forces and retired as a Major. Singh married Vimala daughter of Dr.D.C.Berry of Neyyoor.  He served in the Indian Overseas Bank, and retired from the NAGERCOIL Branch.  Willie was lovingly called “Chinan” by his parents, uncles and aunts.  He was employed in the T.T.K.Company, Madras.

Joe uncle though a very quiet man was like a pillar to all the family people.  Whenever they approached him for help or advice he would readily do it.  Throughout their life all the three brothers Joe, David and Thankaraj were very loving and united and were like a rope which had three strong strains.  He attended  Church Services regularly and showed great interest in the Church affairs like arranging Church Day feast and District Communion feast etc. and was very helpful to his brothers in their Church activities.

He died in the year 1958 and Sophia died in the year 1981.  Their mortal remains were interred in the Home Church Cemetery.
